Welcome back to WDE and the second part of the topic. This section covers estimated charges for domain name, hosting service and website. The figures are based on 2mediastudio’s professional service fees as a reference. However, please take note that the figures may vary, at least slightly, from one provider to another.
Domain Name
A top-level domain (TLD) such as .com, .net, .org and etc. is currently having a suggested retail price by local domain distributor at MYR 55.00 per annual. While Malaysian’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD) such as .com.my, .net.my, .org.my and with the rest of the “my” domain name selling at MYNIC’s suggested retail price which at MYR 100.00.

Hosting Service
There is huge variety of hosting solution in the market. It’s just depending on what are your requirements on the type of the website you’re going to put up. Because different types of websites require different web server requirements.
For example, an informational website’s web server requirements are quite simple in term of overall site complexity or structure. Thus, it does not need a powerful web server to take care of its processing that hardly occurs on an e-commerce website. Unlike those e-commerce sites you may spot, they require extensive web server resources needs a powerful machine because an e-commerce site involves huge amount of loads and transactions that takes up a lot of server resources.
Web server space, web storage space, server disk space and etc, these terms are actually referring to the same thing that you might found it on the hosting or web server spec. It simply means the hard disk capacity allocated for each respective specification that you’re looking at.
The cost changes as you browse through different hosting plans. There’s the example, as for us, we’re currently charging approximately MYR 360.00 / year for a 200MB Web Storage. Some of you may have said “Wow, that’s expensive…” or some of you may remain silent and figuring out what does that means. Well, we’re serious on what we’re offering. If I’m telling you that each of our servers in our data center is using high-end server which of its hard drive is running on a very stable and fast Ultra Fast SCSI hard drive, would it still be expensive? And also, the service and support we bundled, how bout it?
Like most of us will do when it comes to compare hosting plans whereby, you may compare the yearly charges and web storage or space and then you might found some other providers charge higher, some are lower and etc.
Whenever it comes to decision making, it’s always hard and confusing. However, at this point of time, I won’t be covering much on “how to choose a right provider tips”. But, I can tell you that hosting services isn’t just about how much does “A Megabyte” cost per year. It involves a lot more criterion to be taken into serious consideration. May be the first question that pops up in you mind right now is “How much does 2mediastudio are charging for a basic informational website?”
Well, we’re charging at MYR 2,950.00 for an approximately 7 – 10 page-sized website. Please don’t get me wrong. We use page-sized as a guideline and mainly as an benchmarking to our customers on pricing matter, so that they’ll have a rough idea on how much going to cost them for the size of the web site they’re going to put up.
We calculate our project costing for a project as a “project”, meaning to say, we do not break it down into pages and calculate it in per page way. By using this way, we found it is an effective method in project cost calculation. We are able to come up with a balance-point and able to work around on most of the given budgets closely, without overcharge or undercharge a project. Hence, we’re able to fully utilize every dollar the customers spend on the web services with us.
The estimated cost of the website is always a subjective matter to discuss about. Because, the cost depends on the website requirements; the more complex it is, the bigger its structure is, will of course, involved more work to be done at a longer work hour; and it will definitely cost you more.
